Staff Bios

William Lawler, Director of Suburban Law Enforcement Academy (SLEA) and National Law Enforcement Academy (NLEA), is a 30 year law enforcement veteran. Bill retired from the Aurora Police Department after serving as Chief of Police. During his tenure in Aurora, the second largest city in Illinois, Bill was directly responsible for a $50 million dollar police budget. He also served as a Deputy Sheriff for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office. He has a Master’s Degree from Aurora University and a Bachelor’s Degree from Western Illinois University.

As Director of SLEA and NLEA, Bill directs operations of the Basic Police Recruit Training program as well as the Continuing Education program for law enforcement personnel.

 

 

 

 

 

Jim Kempinski currently serves as the Continuing Education Manager of the National Law Enforcement Academy (NLEA) and the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy (SLEA) at College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn, Illinois. In addition to managing the Continuing Education division, Jim also manages SLEA’s Basic Police Recruit Academy program as required.

Having served with distinction as a police officer for 29 years in the State of Wisconsin, Jim began with NLEA/SLEA in 2002. During his law enforcement career, Jim has held the positions of dispatcher, patrol officer, sergeant, commander, and Chief of Police. He served the Whitewater Police Department, Wisconsin in a variety of capacities for 25 years and for 4 years as Chief of Police of the Twin Lakes Police Department, Wisconsin. During that time frame Jim also served as Police Association President for 11 years. Jim is a graduate of Concordia University with a B.A. in Criminal Justice Management and a graduate of the FBI National Academy, 177th Session. Jim’s personal interests include his 4 grandchildren, biking, hunting and camping, as well as supporting the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers and Milwaukee Bucks.

 

 

 

Dan Maloney currently serves as the Basic Academy Program Manager for the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL. Dan briefly worked for the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board as a Police Training Specialist following his retirement from the Bartlett Police Department in 2006.

Dan was a police officer for 28 years. He has served as a patrol officer, detective, patrol sergeant and Lieutenant. He was appointed as a Deputy Chief in 1997 and retired as the Administrative Division Commander responsible for several operation support programs including Police Officer recruitment and department training.

Dan is a graduate of Aurora University with a B.A. in Criminal Justice Management and Roosevelt University – Chicago with a Master of Public Administration. Dan’s personal interests include personal fitness, fishing and camping as well as cheering for the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears.
