Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police - This nationally recognized organization, representing law enforcement executives from across the State of Illinois, was founded in 1941 in Springfield, Illinois.
Police Assessment Resource Center – This non-profit is oriented around issues related to the reform and oversight of police departments. PARC acts as a consultant to cities whose departments are facing court orders to address police misconduct and is known for taking a fair and balanced view. PARC also publishes valuable reports on policing and the Police Practices Review a newsletter that is widely read by police officers and executives as well as others interested in improved policing.
Police Executives Research Forum – This is an organization that brings together police chiefs and executives from both larger and smaller jurisdictions in the US and other countries. The Forum publishes valuable research reports available through its document library and undertakes an ambitious program of research in a wide range of law enforcement and public safety issues.
Private Officer International – This is the website for Private Officer International which is dedicated to the private security industry. The website offers access a number of reports, forums and news related to the industry. The site also links with Security Police News, the Private Officer International talk show hosted by Blog Talk Radio. Security Police News also archives previous programs which are made available on demand.
Criminal Justice Programs – The site contains a comprehensive listing of criminal justice programs by state and by degree ("Associate in Criminal Justice"). The site also has useful descriptions of all kinds of criminal justice and law enforcement careers with the educational requirements for each one.
U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security – The website of this vast agency offers up-to-date information about US government efforts to improve security and safety at all levels of society. The comprehensive nature of the agency makes the website a must for local and regional law enforcement. The site also offers information about employment and training opportunities.
U.S. Dept. of Justice – U.S. Department of Justice website contains up-to-date crime fighting news, useful links and resources. The site also houses The Justice Blog with numerous articles about various issues in law enforcement. Valuable reports from the various branches of the department are also posted such as the 2009 Internet Crime Report from the Internet Crime Complaint Center. The website is also the place to access databases that provide local law enforcement with invaluable information such as most wanted, prison inmates and sex offenders.
I.C.E. – This is the website of Immigration and Customs Enforcement which is the principal investigative arm of the Department of Homeland security. Although the agency is a part of Homeland Security it is so important that it merits special consideration. The site contains up-to-date information regarding its activities and hosts the highly useful detainee locator, Online Detainee Locator System, by which departments across the country can locate a detainee currently in ICE custody or one who was released from custody within the last 60 days.
National Sheriff's Association – The website contains valuable resources for sheriffs, deputies and other law enforcement personnel like Capitol Watch, an electronic newsletter covering federal legislative activity that may have an impact on law enforcement. The association also publishes the Sheriff's Directory an invaluable reference guide to the current holders of Sheriff's positions throughout the US.
Vera Institute of Justice – The Vera Institute of Justice is a nonprofit center for research in justice policy and practice. Through a number of centers and programs, the Vera institute carries out important research into all aspects of the American criminal justice system. The website contains links to all of the centers projects many of which study local policing and parole issues.
American Jail Association – This is a non-profit with members from all facets of the correctional community working in the nation's jail facilities. The site provides links to important databases like the National Atlas of Sentencing and Corrections which are of value to law enforcement personnel at all levels. The site also maintains forums and offers training and certification opportunities.
American Jail & Parole Association – Oriented around probation and parole officers, the APPA is responsible for a number of important ongoing projects aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of law enforcement.The APPA also publishes a journal and an e-newsletter on probation, parole and community corrections issues.
